Title

Photograph, cabinet card, unidentified soldier of the 11th Virginia Infantry CSA & companion.

Description

Post Civil War cabinet card copy of an 1861 photograph showing an unidentified member of company B, 11th Virginia Infantry. This company was named the "Southern Guard" and can be identified by the letters "SG" on the solider's cap as well as the unusually large patriotic cockade pinned to his uniform blouse, as seen in other extant photographs of Southern Guard members.

Seated with him is an unidentified female, likely a sister, girlfriend, or wife. Both subjects exhibit features of the Melungion people, e.g. hispanic facial features and woman has six fingers, a trait found amongst some Melungions.
