September 23, 1847.

Sir: You are hereby informed that the President of the United States has promoted you to the rank of Major in the First Regiment of United States Infantry, vice Clark, deceased, to take the rank from the sixteenth day of February, 1847, and to stand on the list of Majors of the Infantry next below Major Jouett. By and with the advice and consent of the Senate, you will be commissioned accordingly. You will report for orders to Major General Scott, commanding the army in Mexico.-
