This piece is a cake basket which means it was used to serve small cakes, pastries, bread, and fruits at formal events. The silver mark on the bottom of the piece reads "Rogers Bros. MFG. Co. Extra Heavy Plate Hartford Connecticut". This piece is silver plated and not sterling silver. The Rogers Bros MFG Company was created in Hartford, CT in 1853 by brothers William and Asa Jr. Rogers. They produced silverware under this name until 1861 when the company was consolidated with Rogers, Smith, and Co. So this piece was manufactured between 1853 and 1861
