My beloved Son I will write you a few lines altho I sincerely hope you will be at home before this reaches its destination. Mr. Lyons enclosed us your letter of the 10th of April from Washington – We were truly relieved to hear you were in good health and kindly treated – Ada wrote you immediately this Mr. Lyons. We heard in a week after the reception of your letter that you had been not with other officers to Johnson Island, but we were willing to believe it until last night a man by the name of Holmes came here direct from the Island and said he left you there last Saturday week in good health and spirits, he staid all night here and left after breakfast this morning for his home in Tazewell county – I asked him a thousand questions about you. I hope you will take the Oath of Allegiance and come on home where all are so anxious to see and embrace you. Oh how thankful I feel to God that this terrible conflict is over and the life of my darling Boy has been spared and I trust He may still guide you safely and return you to us in a very short time. Your Brother and Mary are still with us and will Ada is at your Aunts we expect her and _ tomorrow. Your Pa is in good health and always busy - Edward and his family are well and at Major Langhorne’s, they were all here Sunday – Johnnie is very fat and rosy. They will commence housekeeping as soon as their furniture comes from Danville they have rented Mrs. Van Otey’s home. Mr. Grigsby has come to the country - Your Brother rode to town this morning we all hoped to hear from you but were disappointed. Ben Grigsby came on from Point lookout and a few days since he looks very well he took the Oath. Everyone is taking it here. Ferdie is very impatient for your return as are all of us. Everything looks beautiful at home the yard is full of flowers and the trees loaded with fruit. Mr. Holmes says you left Washington on the 19th. All send much love. May God bless you my dear child. Is the prayer of your truly devoted Mother.
