Title
Letter, 18 October 1904, J.A. Macauley to Col. J. Risque Hutter
Description
Letter sent to J. Risque Hutter at Sandusky by J. A. Macauley thanking Hutter for his help in the disinterment and shipment the remains of Macauley's brother-in-law, James O. Mills.
It is unknown where Mills had been buried, possibly at Sandusky as there were a small number of Union soldiers buried on Sandusky property, or at the Quaker Meeting House where more soldiers were buried; Hutter served as a trustee for the meeting house then. Ada Hutter states in her diary "Down the grove just back of the barn there are a dozen mounds, not but one of them with any head stone."
James O. Mills was a member of Battery D, 1st West Virginia Light Artillery and was killed in action on 18 June 1864 at the Battle of Lynchburg. He was reinterred at Arlington National Cemetery.

My Dear Col.
I am glad to inform you that the War Dept. notified me on the 13th that the remains of my brother-in-law, James O. Mills, were in the receiving vault at Arlington and that they would be re-interred at a date to be fixed at an interview. At the interview the time fixed was last Saturday at 2:30 P.M. Eight relatives of the family were present at the re-interment. The grave is located in a beautiful spot.
All were much pleased to have the remains so near, especially my wife who desires me to thank you specially on her account.
I should be glad to know whether the Department notified you in time to be present, and if you were present, whether there were any buckles or buttons found with the remains. I presume there would be little else after forty years.
If you will address me at the Pension Bureau instead of my residence address I will consider it a favor.
If I can ever serve you in any way here or elsewhere I hope you will feel free at all times to call on me. With sincerest thanks and best wishes I am yours- J.A. Macauley
