Silver Loving Cup, 19th Century
Title
Silver Loving Cup, 19th Century
Subject
Otey Family (Lynchburg, Va.)
Description
Silver Loving Cup, belonging to the Otey family. According to family tradition this cup was used to toast and drink wine by soon-to-be-wed family members at their engagement parties.
The hallmark indicates the cup was made between 1828 and 1846 which overlaps with the Otey ownership of Sandusky (1821-1848). The cup was used for its intended purpose into the 21st century. The Kirk silversmith firm was founded in 1815 in Baltimore, Maryland by 22 year-old Samuel Kirk. In 1828 Kirk introduced an ornate style of repousse decoration that has become known as the "Baltimore Style." The company experienced several partnerships and name changes. It is still in business today known as Kirk-Stieff.
